Ables asks of San Diego State College, "Is there anyone left at school anymore? Or are they all in [the armed forces] by this time." He sends his new address, going "overseas" for the first time. Ables's unit number indicates that he was being sent to what was then known as Batavia, now Jakarta, Java. The battle for Java had been won in March 1942.
