Ensign Goode is on the United States Ship St. Louis (CL-49), having left San Diego State College for Navy training at Annapolis. Now, on the light cruiser that survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, Goode and his shipmates "have come to look upon things like raids and attacks and torpedoes as merely daily incidents." Like other ships of her class, the St. Louis provided escort.
