circa 1911
Enter a free text date.
The name of Piedad Yorba y Sowl's and Charles Sowl's Casa Verdugo had to be changed in 1911, when Pacific Electric Railroad lost a lawsuit over the name. Before the Sowls were discharged in 1910, they copyrighted and trademarked the name Casa Verdugo, Inc., and sued the owners for their continued use of it. The Sowls continued to use the name after the restaurant moved to their home close by. The area continued to be known loosely as "Casa Verdugo, California" (an unincorporated area of Glendale), but here is said to also be in "Ramada, California." The publisher's number on the back of the card is 10929. The Pacific Electric (streetcar) company's logo is on the back, along with "Quaint Casa Verdugo Park and Restaurant," that could be "reached by Glendale Cars of Pacific Electric Railway."
