Crowds gather on Avalon beach as the steamship ferry arrives. In this case the ship is the Catalina, launched in 1924 by the owner of the island and the Wilmington Transportation Company steamship line to take up the slack in service to the island. In the distance to the left of the steamship, the round building is the "casino," not a gambling establishment but a ballroom (The Avalon Ballroom) and movie theater, one of the first equipped for sound films and the site of previews by Hollywood producers.
