Ampitheater and Bay, Santa Catalina Island, California
Van Ornum Colorprint Co., Los Angeles, California
This picture postcard looks like PC-001-065 and PC-001-062, just cropped, magnified, and colored differently. In all three cards, a steamship is departing on the far right as another one docks at the steamer pier behind it. The Green Pleasure pier is busy, and so is the amphitheatre on the hill, showing the incline railway beside it. On the hill toward the top of each card, the Peter Gano House (1890) sits, with its cupola appearing to point toward Sugar Loaf Rock on the northwest rim of Avalon Bay. The motto on the back, "On the Road of a Thousand Wonders," indicates that Catalina was considered a destination for a promotion of The Coast Line-Shasta Route by Southern Pacific Railroad with promotional booklets from 1907 and 1908. Maps of the period indicate that San Pedro was on this route, from which one could catch a steamship to Catalina. The publisher's number on the back is E 4.
