A steamship is departing the Steamer Pier at Avalon, while at the other end of the pier that is parallel to shore, a paddlewheeler of the sort used for glass-bottom boats has pulled into a slot where a crowd has gathered. This pier only lasted two years (1906-1908) before it was destroyed by a storm. Prominent on the hill to the right is the Peter Gano House, built in 1890. Defining the far northwestern end of Avalon Bay is Sugar Loaf Rock on the right. The publisher started to call his business the "Newman Post Card Co." in 1907, and his number for this card (on the back) is E.5. Like most of the cards of this era, this one was made in Germany. The address of the Banning Company that owned most of the island at the time is on the back.
