Avalon and Bay, Santa Catalina Island, California
Van Ornum Colorprint Co., Los Angeles, California
One steamship ferry is in port while another departs toward the right edge of the picture. At the Green Pleasure Pier (1909) toward the bottom, small boats and crowds congregate. The Peter Gano or Holly Hill House, built in 1890, dominates the hill on the right side, while seemingly above it, toward the horizon, Sugar Loaf Rock defines the northwest border of Avalon Bay. The motto "On the Road of a Thousand Wonders" referred to a promotion of the Coast Line-Shasta Route of the Southern Pacific. Maps of the period indicate that San Pedro was on this route, from which one could catch a steamship to Catalina. Southern Pacific promotional booklets date from 1907 and 1908. Both the publisher and the contributor began operations in 1908. The publisher's number on the back is E 45.
