A steamship is departing the only pier, the Steamer Pier. The absence of the Green Pleasure Pier (compare PC-001-150) or its predecessor (PC-001-155) helps to date this postcard. The pier parallel to the shore shown in the latter postcard was destroyed by a storm in 1908, the new one built in 1909. This alone would place this card either before 1906, when the earlier pier was built, or during 1908 or 1909 before the new pier was built. But the card has a divided back, an innovation not allowed before March 1, 1907. This leaves the 1908-1909 timeframe. On the hill to the right, the Holly Hill House is easily visible, built by Peter Gano in 1890. Toward the top on the right is Sugar Loaf Point, which defines the northwest edge of Avalon Bay, with Sugar Loaf Rock jutting out into the ocean. The publisher's number on the back is 438.
