Stage Road on Santa Catalina Island, California

 

 

 

 

A switchback toward the summit of the stagecoach road on Santa Catalina Island gives some hint of the steepness of the inclines travelled. The coach roads were begun in 1896, four years after the Banning Brothers bought 99 percent of the island, but it was two years before "Middle Ranch" in about the center between Avalon and the isthmus had been reached. The roads went all the way to the isthmus, about 23 miles from Avalon by land. No publisher is given, but the number 7679 appears in the upper left corner before the title. The back is divided, placing the manufacture of this postcard after March 1, 1907, when postal regulations changed to allow messages on the same side as the address.
