Golf Links at Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, California
Van Ornum Co., Los Angeles, California
The golf course on Catalina Island has been located up Avalon Canyon Road behind the town since it was built in 1892. It was designed as a three-hole course and increased to nine in the early 1900s. "On the Road of a thousand wonders" on the back of the card indicates that Catalina was considered a destination for a promotion of The Coast Line-Shasta Route of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Maps of the period indicate that San Pedro was on this route, from which one could catch a steamship to Catalina. Booklets dated 1907 and 1908 from Southern Pacific used this motto. Avalon Canyon surrounds the course.
