Black Bass caught near Santa Catalina Island, California
A large catch (generally sea bass) was a common subject of Catalina Island postcards. Generally the weight was given somewhere, in this case 436 lb, and sometimes the time it took to land the fish, here given as 43 minutes. "On the Road of a thousand wonders" on the back of this picture postcard indicates that Catalina was considered a destination for a promotion of The Coast Line-Shasta Route of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Maps of the period indicate that San Pedro was on this route, from which one could catch a steamship to Catalina. The publisher, called "The Rieder," has his number on the back, P 33.
