Large sea bass caught near Santa Catalina Island, California
Van Ornum Colorpint Co., Los Angeles
Sea bass, especially groupers, were called "jewfish," and are known for growing to hundreds of pounds. Both Van Ornum and Newman Post Card Company date from 1908. The motto, "On the Road of a Thousand Wonders," on the back indicates that Catalina was considered a destination for a promotion of The Coast Line-Shasta Route of the Southern Pacific from Los Angeles through San Francisco, to Portland, by Southern Pacific Railroad. Maps of the period indicate that San Pedro was on this route, from which one could catch a steamship to Catalina. Promotional brochures date from 1907-1908. The publisher's number near the bottom right corner on the back is E 41.
