Descanso Canyon from Sugar Loaf Rock, Santa Catalina Island, California
Van Ornum Colorprint Co., Los Angeles, California
The viewpoint is just to the south of and slightly behind Sugar Loaf Rock, which did not exist after March of 1929. The view is of Descanso Bay and Descanso Canyon northwest of Avalon Bay, on Catalina. Showing just over the edge of Sugar Loaf Rock (also known as Little Sugarloaf) is the Hancock Banning residence, built in 1895, insuring that this picture is from no later than 1918. In 1918 construction began on the St. Catherine Hotel on the same spot, requiring that the residence be moved. "On the Road of a Thousand Wonders" is printed on the back, indicating that Catalina was a destination featured by Southern Pacific Railroad for its Coast Line-Shasta Route promotional campaign, with booklets in 1907 and 1908. The publisher's number on the back is E 27.
