On Road to Eagle's Nest, Santa Catalina Island, California
Van Ornum Colorprint Co., Los Angeles, California
The stagecoach line from Avalon to Eagle's Nest (Eagle Nest Camp or Lodge) ran for about 12 miles up Descanso Canyon and took about an hour going up in 1901, according to contemporary traveler Charles Holder. This was the road to the isthmus of Catalina from Avalon. On 2014 maps, "Stage Road" going north west from Avalon through Descanso Canyon is clearly marked and leads to Middle Ranch Road, mentioned in Holder's account. From there the road goes on to join Little Harbor Road, leading to the isthmus. "On the Road of a Thousand Wonders" is printed on the back of this picture postcard, indicating that Catalina Island was a destination featured by Southern Pacific Railroad for its Coast Line-Shasta Route promotional campaign. Stagecoaches were used until the Greeley Stage Company switched to automobiles in 1914.
