In this issue it is explained that San Diego State Teachers College came about through the "fusion of the Normal School and the Junior College." The former had been establilshed in 1897, and the latter at San Diego High School in 1914. The color of the cover represents a compromise between the colors of the two schools: blue and gold (the Junior College) and gold and white (the Normal School). It was expected that gold and purple would be "the colors under which the College will go forward..." They also translate "Del Sudoeste" as "Out of the Southwest," referring to the direction from which the new "animal" comes. This "first annual" was dedicated to President Edward L. Hardy, who served from 1910-1935. The student bodies fused as the State College Student Body, and the junior college's "Paper Lantern" was adopted as the school "paper."
