According to a newspaper article in the Inter Ocean of 1887, the San Diego Commercial College taught "young ladies and gentlemen...practical instruction in bookkeeping, penmanship, mathematics, stenography, type-writing and commercial law." The Sefton Block," C Street at 4th Avenue was built in three years from 1899 to 1901. Since the building is referred to as "new," the implication is that this postcard would have been produced sometime in the few years after completion, but it must have been produced after postal regulations changed in 1907, allowing messages to be written on the back. The College was listed in the 1905 and 1907 City and County Directory, occupying a portion of the third floor of the Sefton Building. A photograph of the building is centered between photographs of the founders, Charles Irwin Jenney and Frederick W. Kelsey. Mr. Kelsey appears to have signed the message on the back.
