Southern Pacific/Union Pacific Railroads
The back of this untraveled picture postcard marks it as one of a series produced as part of promotional photography for the Southern Pacific Railroad between 1890 and 1910. The phrase "On the Road of a Thousand Wonders" was used for the campaign, in this case probably for a spur from the route of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railroad between Omaha and San Francisco that came as far south as San Diego. This line is shown on a map from the railroads' book The Overland Route to the Road of a Thousand Wonders from 1908. The sepia-toned postcard shows the original building and expansion constructed for the San Diego Normal School from 1898-1910 (original portion centered here dedicated 1899). This building, designed by Irving Gill (1870-1936), continued to be used as the school changed its name to the State Teachers' College, until the Montezuma Mesa location was occupied in 1931. The view here is almost the same as on PC-000-979 in this collection, as well as in PC-000-988.
