Picture postcard of sculpture of Montezuma ("The Aztec") in the main quadrangle of San Diego State College
Sculpture of Montezuma by Donal Hord, in the Main Quad of the San Diego State College campus. San Diego artist Donal Hord (1902-1966) sculpted the Aztec for San Diego State College. The statue of an Aztec warrior was cut from a single 2.5-ton block of black diorite. The Depression-era WPA (Work Projects Administration) provided funds for Hords salary, but funding for tools and materials had to come from private sources. The San Diego Art Guild and several local campus student groups donated money. Hord and his assistant, Homer Dana (1900-1987), completed the statue in 1937. It was originally located on the Main Quad, and in 1984 moved to the south entrance of the college. Due to trolley construction, it was relocated in the Prospective Student Center. The publisher of this photographic picture postcard established business in 1936.
