Picture postcard of Gray Castle period of San Diego High School, with stadium and game in progress
The original San Diego High School was named Russ School, desgned by architects Victor and William B. Stewart in 1881. It was finished in 1882, named after the lumberman who donated the lumber and material costs for construction. The old high school building was moved off the site and it burned down in 1911. It was replaced by a Gothic Revival building known as the "Grey Castle," designed by F. S. Allen (1860-1934), with construction starting in 1906. Construction continued beyond this original building , with cornerstones for others laid in 1912, the stadium built in 1914, in 1922 and 1923 separate gymnasiums for men and women, and an auditorium in 1926. After Callifornia legislation in the 1960s required the razing of all school buildings built prior to 1933, due to earthquake concerns, architect Richard G. Wheeler (1917-1990) was retained in 1970 to design a new school. Demolition and construction proceeded simultaneously on different buildings starting in 1973 and ending with occupation of all four new buildings in 1977.
