Curt Teich
This predecessor to Mercy Hospital on University Avenue at the northeast corner of 6th Street was operated by the Sisters of Mercy, along with the "Home for the Aged" nearby at Seventh and University. The oldest hospital in San Diego, Mercy Hospital was founded by the Catholic Sisters of Mercy in San Diego in 1890 as the St. Joseph's Dispensary, with the first building opened in 1891 at Eighth Avenue and University. In 1915 a school of nursing was accredited there, and in 1924 the hospital was renamed. During the early years of the 20th century, many hospitals dedicated a portion of their services to a sanitarium or convalescent facility. This picture postcard must have been created between 1907 and 1915, given the divided back (a change in postal regulations allowed this) and the fact that the publisher ceased operations in 1915. The number on the back of this untraveled card next to the "made in Germany" declaration is 4937. The Curt Teich number is upside down in the stamp box: 61094.
