The San Diego Naval Hospital started construction in 1922 after a tent dispensary was established in 1914. More land was deeded to the Navy in subsequent years, and finally a new Naval Medical Center in Florida Canyon, east of this complex, was dedicated in 1988. The number 3C precedes the title in the upper white margin.
