New Naval Hospital, San Diego, California
The San Diego Naval Hospital started construction in 1922 after a tent dispensary established in 1914 was expanded to support a Navy training camp in Balboa Park. More land was deeded to the Navy in subsequent years, and finally a new Naval Medical Center in Florida Canyon, Balboa Park, was dedicated in 1988. A 1930 view (San Diego History Center photograph #2542), shows the same extent of buildings but very different landscaping.
