The Hotel Florence was designed by William W. Bowers (1834-1917, Alonzo Horton's brother-in-law) and opened in 1884. In 1891, San Diego architect William Sterling Hebbard (1863-1930) remodeled the hotel. By 1907 the hotel was known as the Hotel Robinson, and by 1918 it had changed names again to Casa Loma. This "undivided back" postcard would not have been produced much beyond 1907, since in that year postal regulations allowed messages to be written beside addresses on the back of the card. Earlier than that, a lot of space was left beside or under photographs for messages, as here. In the upper right corner of the back of this card is the logo of the Balloon Route Excursion trolley trip, which places the postcard after 1900.
