Hotel Balboa, San Diego, California

By October of 1907, US postal regulations had changed, and postcard manufacturers had begun placing space on the address side of the card for messages or return addresses, had even, as with this card, started filling the entire space on the picture side of the card with a photograph. This card is postmarked October 16, 1907 and shows a full-width and height hand-tinted photograph of the Hotel Balboa on Pacific Beach, with automobiles pulling up and people sitting on the steps. The Hotel Balboa was established in around 1890 in the "principal building" of the failed San Diego College of Letters at Pacific Beach. It is mentioned in the book "History of San Diego" by William E. Smythe (online fromthe San Diego History Center) as part of a "settlement" that "will soon have two electric lines." The same history is given by Richard Pourade in "The History of San Diego," also unline from the History Center. In this collection, on PC-000-807, is an earlier postcard made for advertising purposes, with no space on the back for anything but an address.
