Colonial Apartment Hotel, San Diego, California, US
This color picture postcard represents the Colonial Apartment Hotel (or Hotel Colonial as on the sign in the photograph) before its extensive restoration and name change between 1976 and 1980. Opened in 1913, the hotel underwent its first serious change when the owner, George Bane, commissioned architect Frank Stevenson (1892-1968) to design a new building. The old building was moved to the back of the property, and the four-story structure shown here rose on the original site and was opened in 1928. At this time Silas O. Putnam's establishment, The La Jolla Drugstore moved into the main building, with an ice cream paror on the sidewalk. Putnam was the father of American actor Gregory Peck, who grew up in La Jolla. In 1988, the hotel (after 1976 the Colonial Inn) was sold--twice--and from 1999 to 2001 the hotel underwent another renovation and name change, this time to the Grande Colonial. In 2007 a restoration project was begun, and in 2012, in time for the 2013 centennial, the results of another renovation were unveiled. The number on the back of the card, apparently for Freeman Studios, is 87591.
