Picture postcard of interior of Don Room at El Cortez Hotel, San Diego, showing carved sandalwood ceiling
The ground-floor Don Room of the El Cortez Hotel featured a carved sandalwood ceiling supported by 8 pillars, 4 of which can easily be seen in this picture-postcard, sepia-tinted photograph. Another feature is the inlaid maple floor for this "grand ballroom, listed as costing $3,000 (1927 dollars?). The room is shaped like an octagon. Built on the site of the U. S. Grant, Jr. home on Ash Street, the hotel was the tallest building (at 310 feet) in San Diego from its opening in 1927 until 1963. The El Cortéz was designed by the firm of Albert R. Walker (1981-1958) and Percy Eisen (1885-1946), the architects responsible for the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. On the reverse of the postcard is the following in the message area: "El Cortez Hotel owned and operated by Grant Terrace Building Co. Ltd. G. W. Price, President Richard I. Scollin, Manager."
