E. C. Kropp Co., Milwaukee, Wisconsin
This divided picture postcard shows the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego, along with the bar of the Sky Room. Built on the site of the U. S. Grant, Jr. home on Ash Street, the hotel was the tallest building (at 310 feet) in San Diego from its opening in 1927 until 1963. The El Cortéz was designed by the firm of Albert R. Walker (1981-1958) and Percy Eisen (1885-1946), the architects responsible for the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The Art Deco Sky Room, shown on the right, was added on the 15th story in 1940, with glass walls completely around the dining room, offering a view of San Diego. This card is essentially the same as PC-000-771 but with what appears to be a drawing instead of a photograph of the Sky Room, with patrons drawn in at the bar and at dining tables, and lights from ships on San Diego Bay.
