Real Photo Post Card of four women and a small house, probably San Diego
The Real Photo process allowed amateur and professional photographers to take "snap shots," deliver the film to a photo-finishing shop, and take away postcards ready for mailing. However, the back of the postcard could be used for addresses only until 1907, and most cards were printed with enough space next to or around the photograph for a return address and message. In this case the location is unidentified (unless it's "The Barnacle" mentioned in the message on the other side), and the women are also unknown, although one of them might be the writer of the message, which is signed "Emma F. Way." The card was not mailed but stamped with a raised Christmas seal and the message written in both the "correspondence" and "address" portions of the card. Although the postcard must have been processed after about March of 1907, a more precise date cannot be divined in the usual way, from the stamp box, which carried the logo of the paper maker. Since paper types for postcard photo finishing were manufactured for limited periods--sometimes as little as three years--this is the usual way of creating date ranges for Real Photo Post Cards.
