The Real Photo process allowed amateur and professional photographers to take "snap shots," deliver the film to a photo-finishing shop, and take away postcards ready for mailing. The writer or a family member probably took this photograph of an unidentified private home, which was then used for a greeting card. After 1901 US Post Office regulations changed to allow the use of the words "Post Card" to be used by private entities, and during the year 1907 the regulations also changed to permit the back of the card to be divided so that a message could be written on the same side as the address. This card, with an "undivided back" and the message written on the picture side of the card, had therefore to be manufactured between 1901--it has the words "Post Card" printed on the back--and 1907, when companies making the postcard backs started printing them such that messages could be written on the back of the card, and the images could take up more space on the picture side.
