Picture postcard labelled "Putman's Residence," in San Diego, California
The publisher of this hand-tinted picture postcard was in business from 1900-1923. The "Putman" referred to here in the label "Putman's Residence" may have been Madison Dekalb Putman, Jr. (1841-1915), a "notable homesteader," according to a description by the San Diego History Center. Putman, a Civil-War veteran, owned Fair View fruit farm, 160 acres in Spencer Valley, San Diego County, which he homesteaded in 1868 with his wife Louisa Casner. The Putmans had six surviving children, any male of whom could have been meant by this label: John Edward, Martin M., James Randolph, David Franklin, or Harvey Dekalb.
