Picture postcard of aerial view of San Diego's old Civic Center on the waterfront, with downtown San Diego stretching beyond
In the center foreground of this hand-tinted picture postcard is the old Civic Center (1938), later the San Diego County Administration Center, at 1600 Pacific Highway. The building faces west onto San Diego Bay. Aside from the structure designed by Samuel Wood Hamill (1903-1989), the site also features a sculpture by Donal Hord (1902-1966), "Guardian of Water." West Beech Street stretches from Harbor Drive to the east just to the right of the Civic Center, and West Ash extends from the rightmost edge toward the middle of the photograph to the right of the El Cortez. Behind the building West Cedar extends east, and to the left of that is West Date Street, which does not extend much past Kettner Boulevard running north and south. The publishers were in business from the 1930s until 1957.
