The Hotel Brewster, shown in this hand-colored picture postcard on the corner of Fourth Avenue and C Street, with a sign near street level toward the right, operated from 1888 until 1934, when it was demolished. In the center of the street is what may be a Class 1 streetcar with the enhanced sign "Ramonas Home, Pacific Beach, La Jolla" on the front, with a horse and carriage approaching the camera before it. (The superstructure of the streetcar line is not visible, but the tracks are.) Class 1 (covered) streetcars with central entrances were introduced in 1912 after problems surfaced with the open California cars. The streetcar line to La Jolla was No. 16, and the full reach of the line to La Jolla was completed in 1924. There appears to be something amiss with the statement printed on the front of the card that Fourth Avenue and C Streets was the "terminus of the La Jolla Car Line," because an article in the Journal of San Diego History states that that line did not go to the corner of Fourth Avenue and C Street. The most likely explanation is that the streetcar line was misidentified; this seems all the more plausible given the fact that the sign on the front of the streetcar looks hand drawn.
