St. Paul's Cathedral in the Bankers Hill district of San Diego, is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, designed by Philip Frohman (1887-1972) starting in 1923. The initial parish house built on this site (here on the left) was the first building in use while financial and legal setbacks delayed construction of the church and required frequent change of plans. The parish house by itself may be seen in PC-000-592. The church, described as "neo-Gothic" in style, was opened in December of 1951, while construction on the chapel and other areas continued. As of 2005, according to the Journal of San Diego History, construction was ongoing. The diocese was created in 1973 by dividing the Los Angeles diocese. This church claims to be first Protestant congregation in San Diego and the first to construct a church building, being a year ahead of the First Methodist Church in both instances. It now occupies the entire block bounded by Olive Street on the north, Nutmeg Street on the south, and Fifth and Sixth Avenues on the west and east, with its address on Sixth Avenue. This view is from the intersection of Sixth and Nutmeg Streets. The publisher's number on the back of this card is S24853.
