Picture postcard of the First Baptist Church, also known as the White Temple, San Diego, California
First Baptist Church, San Diego, California, US
This is a picture postcard depicting what looks like a black-and-white photograph of the First Baptist Church (known as the "White Temple") at 930 Tenth Street in San Diego, California. This is the third venue for this congregation (the 2nd on the same site), the fourth on Governor Drive in 2013. It is known that the First Baptist Church, built at this address in 1888, succeeded the "Old Baptist Church" on Seventh Avenue, and by 1969 the White Temple was vacated for the third venue. This structure exists in 2013 and is occupied by the 10th Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre. Five postcards of this building exist in this postcard collection, three black and white and two apparently hand colored. This appears to be later than the colored cards, since two buildings show beside the church on the left. On the reverse of this card, the pastor's name is given as Paul K. Whiteker, D.D., and the church is described as the "Oldest Protestant Church in San Diego," with an organization date of 1869, its address, and facts about the physical plant--three buildings with 124 rooms.
