This picture postcard shows what appears to be a hand-colored photograph of the First Church of Christ Scientist at the corner of 2nd and Laurel Streets, San Diego, California. Founded in 1987, the church is still operating in 2013, originally a "branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston," where Christian Science originated, according to the church's Web site. This location continues to support a Christian Science Reading Room. The church's Web site contains a history page with a photograph of the structure on this postcard, designed by Irving Gill (1870-1936) and built in 1910. That photograph shows a taller tree on the corner and telegraph/telephone wires along the side of the building, but there is also a logo on the back of the card for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915, so it appears that this image was made between 1910 and 1915. The building was remodeled in the 1950s, then restored after structural problems were discovered in the mid-19802. The restoration resulted in the building's being listed "as an historical landmark by the City of San Diego." Another postcard almost exactly the same is in this same collection as PC-000-558. Only the cloud formations appear to be different, testifying to the hand-tinted nature of the image. Each card also has a different logo for the Exposition on the reverse. The Curt Teich number on the back of the card is A10537.
