A picture postcard representing the painting "The Love Letter" by Gerard ter Borch
Hester & Smith, Inc., San Diego, California, US
Gerard ter Borch (1617-1681) popularized the theme of letters in Dutch painting. This representation of one of his paintings entited "The Love Letter" is on a picture postcard. There are many variations of the artists name, including Borch Gerard Ter the Younger, Ten Burgh Gerard, and so on. This painting was in the Munich Gallery as of 1901. The message section of the postcard states that the painting was "Bought and anonymously given to the Fine Arts Society, 1945." The address portion of this postcard has the words "Reiffel Painting" written on it, probably referring to San Diego painter Charles Reiffel (1862-1942), who was a member of the San Diego Museum of Art's Board of Trustees.
