This picture postcard from the "Animal Color Series from the San Diego Zoo" identifies the animal in the picture section as a "Hippopotamus" from "Africa." Males engage in this threat display, known as "yawning," in the water, where they are territorial. Hippos (or hippopotami) are classified in 2013 as "vulnerable" by the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature). The Curt Teich number showing in the stampbox is 1DK-938, decoding to the year 1961. The publisher number in the upper left corner on the back is SDZ-6.
