A male Indian elephant stands with his front feet on a fence rail and appears to be trumpeting, at the San Diego Zoo
The image on this picture postcard is a black-and-white photograph. The inscription in the message section identifies the animals as "Indian Elephants" at the " San Diego Zoo." In the photograph three elephants are standing inside a fenced enclosure. The elephant in the foreground is standing on the bottom rail of the fence with its trunk upraised as if trumpeting. This elephant has tusks and is therefore a male. Indian elephants are a subspecies of Asian elephants, which are classified in 2013 as "vulnerable" by the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
