The Old Globe Theatre was constructed for the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935 and was the site of the San Diego National Shakespeare Festival held each summer in San Diego's Balboa Park until 1978. In that year the theater burned down, and the players moved to other venues, including a Festival Stage where the Festival continues to be held as of 2013. The new theater continues to be used for an annual season of plays.
