The Old Globe Theatre was constructed for the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935 and was the site of the San Diego National Shakespeare Festival held each summer in San Diego's Balboa Park until 1978. In that year the theater burned down, and the players moved to other venues. When the reimagined theater was built, the players went back to performing in the theater except during festivals.
