Patio, House of Hospitality, Balboa Park, San Diego, California
The House of Hospitality was originally built for the Panama-California International Exposition of 1915-1916 as the Foreign Arts Building (also known as the Foreign Liberal Arts Building), designed by architect Carleton M. Winslow (1910-1946). It was remodeled by Richard Requa (1881-1941) for the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935, who added the second floor seen in this view of the courtyard. It was later demolished and rebuilt in the same Spanish-Renaissance style, afterward used as the Balboa Park Visitors Center. The statue in the center of the fountain, "Woman of Tehuantepec" (La Tehuana), of Indiana limestone, was created by Donal Hord (1902-1966) in 1935, where it was first seen at the California Pacific International Exhibition in this newly reconstructed courtyard.
