El Prado looking easts from the Plaza de Panama, Balboa Park, San Diego

 

 

 

 

El Prado street is shown looking east from the Plaza de Pacifico (Plaza de Panama) in San Diego's Balboa Park (originally City Park). On the left is the American Legion Building, known as the Home Economy Building built for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915, Pan-Pacific Building, and (during the California Pacific Exposition of 1935) the Cafe of he World. Demolished to make way for the Timken Museum in 1963, this building was designed by Carleton Monroe Winslow (1876-1946). On the right is the House of Hospitality, also designed by Winslow for the 1915 Exposition, known then as the Foreign Arts Building (Foreign Liberal Arts Building). Also demolished, this building was rebuilt in 1997 and houses the Balboa Park Visitors Center. Beyond the House of Hospitality is the 1915 Commerce and Industries Building that housed the administration offices of the 1935 Exposition. It was also known as the Palace of Better Housing, the Electric Building, and the San Diego Aerospace Museum from 1965-1978, when it burned down. It was rebuilt and reopened as the Casa de Balboa in 1982.
