The San Diego Naval Hospital started construction in 1922 after a tent dispensary established in 1914 was expanded to support a Navy training camp in Balboa Park. More land was deeded to the Navy, and finally a new Naval Medical Center in Florida Canyon, Balboa Park, was dedicated in 1988, east of the old main building. The Curt Teich number is 9A-H2260, decoding the date to 1939.
