El Cid (Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, 10431099) was a medieval hero of the eleventh century known for his support of Christianity and his efforts at driving the Moors out of Spain. This bronze sculpture by Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973) was originally created in 1921, with this copy cast in 1927. It was the first outdoor statue in Balboa Park, and the pedestal (reported to be concrete or Indiana limestone) was designed by architect William Templeton Johnson. The inscription on the pedestal reads "El Cid Campeador Presented by the Trustees of the Hispanic Society of America July 5, 1930." The statue was given to the City of San Diego, remaining in its position at the end of El Prado into the 21st century.
