Spreckels Organ Pavillon and Science and Education Building, Balboa Park
This is a view from the northwest of the end of the Esplanade leading from the Plaza de Panama (formerly Plaza del Pacifico) to the Spreckels Organ Pavillion in San Diego's Balboa Park. These structures were built for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915, held to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. John D. (1853-1926) and Adolph B. Spreckels (1857-1924) donated the Spreckels pipe organ to the City of San Diego in 1914. Designed by Frank P. Allen, Jr. (1881-1943), the San Joaquin Valley Counties Building, on the left in the middle, limits the possible dates on which the photograph was taken, since it was razed in 1933. The Science and Education Building (Building No. 4), at the left bottom, was the Palace of Photography for the California-Pacific International Exposition of 1935, the Medical Arts Building for the Exposition of 1936, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building in 1939 before it was torn down in 1962.
