Aerial view of San Diego's Balboa Park (formerly City Park), showing prominently the California Tower and the California Building (San Diego Museum of Man) at the center toward the top. Coming in from the left is the Cabrillo Bridge (Puente de Cabrillo), carrying El Prado street over Cabrillo Canyon and into the Park. Going under the bridge, with traffic near one of the arches, is California State Route 163 (Camino Cabrillo). On the right near the edge and the vertical center is the orange building of the San Diego Naval Hospital, of which the chapel was later used as the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center. Because the area between the buildings from the Panama-California Exposition of 1915 and the Naval Hospital is completely undeveloped, this photograph must have been taken before 1935, when the California Pacific International Exposition expanded into the southeast portion of the Park. South and running slightly west from the California State Building complex, in the middle of the photograph, can be seen the Parade Ground, with the US Marine Camp, and the state buildings: New Mexico, Washington, Kansas, Utah, and Montana. Of these, only the New Mexico Building survives, as the Balboa Park Club. On a direct line from the California Tower toward the right Spreckels Organ Pavilion can be seen.
