The House of Hospitality was originally constructed for the Panama-California International Exposition of 1915 as the Foreign Arts Building (also Foreign Liberal Arts Building), designed by architect Carleton M. Winslow (1910-1946). It was redesigned by Richard Requa (1881-1941) for the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935, who added the second floor seen in this view of the courtyard. Finally, it was demolished and rebuilt in the same Spanish-Renaissance style in 1997 and houses the Balboa Park Visitors Center, The El Prado restaurant, the Balboa Park Gift Shop, and the San Diego Police Department storefront. Seen at the right is the "Woman of Tehuantepec" statue (La Tehuana) by Donal Hord (1902-1966), at the center of the fountain.
