Chas. Hardy, Esq.
San Diego, Calif.

Dear Sir:-- I have endeavored to see you for three or four days, but have failed to do so. Mr. Robinson tells me you tell him there is no use in figuring on it, that you cannot meet the figures offered by the San Francisco butcher, and that you think when he commented to furnish the meat he will not furnish the right good meat any more cheaply than you do. So far as I can tell from the papers submitted to me by Mr. Zander, the San Francisco butcher does furnish the right kind of meat at a considerably less price than do you, and surrounds the safeguards that will protect us.

As you know, I want to give you the preference, and do not want to authorize a contract for the buying of meat that will take the business away from here; at the same time I cannot understand how you can supply the steamers and the other butcher at San Francisco pay freight to the steamship company and deliver the meat here. So I write this note before taking any steps which will bind us to continue to take meat from San Francisco as long as they furnish it as they offer to do.

Yours truly,
E.S. Babcock
