The Dramatic Arts Building and Don Powell Theatre was built in 1967. The main stage was re-named in 1987 after the passing of professor emeritus and former chairman of the drama department, Don Powell. The 63,000 square foot theatre was designed in part through the direction of Powell and the planning and design took nearly seven years working with state architects. The building was selected in 1969 as "one of the outstanding university theaters in the nation" by the Architectural Council of the American Theatre Association.
