Chavis misses American women. He talked with one native woman who thought the laces in leather boots were to hang in mangrove trees to attract good spirits "with another ration of American shoe cow" to eat. He tells a couple more stories about interactions with native peoples but doesn't find the place where he is to be "endurable."
